About This Spectacular Vintage Wrought Iron Fence |
Some 20 years ago I was living in a fabulous c. 1920s Arts and Crafts home in the last exclusive part of Trenton, New Jersey, and teaching science at the time. The yard / grounds are comprised of two lots, which I landscaped with many varieties of evergreens, fruit trees and flowering plants which I like; the coowner and I added a three tier koi pond. I have a very selective taste for things, and wanted a fence for in front which would fit in with the property and last at least as long as the home had -- none of that chintzy chain link for this place! A friend told me that someone he knows in Bayonne, New Jersey had an old family mansion with a wrought iron fence that used to be in front and he is thinking of selling it at a reasonable price because he wanted to build a shopping center on the site-- well, I know what those fences cost now days, and they do NOT make them like they used to, so I took a trip up north and saw the thing, just to get out for some fresh air and see new stuff. SOLID AS A ROCK, not the hollow stuff they make you these days -- the owner estimates it was forged in the late 1800s just for that property -- there were a few segments which needed straightening, all in great shape, maybe a tad weathered, but that was easily fixable, so I got it -- he didn't keep the posts for some reason -- 12 segments, each of which cost me $400 -- now how do I get them to Trenton? I could not lift a segment by myself. We hired a large uhaul with a lift gate, and slowly made our way back to Trenton, very slowly with the back end dragging! OK, my next step was to contact the last olde tyme iron smith in the area, who had done some minor work for me previously, and ask him to straighten what needed work, to prime it well, and to make me posts for the fence segments, which he did for a total of $1,000 -- he brought it all back, very nicely done, BUT then I had an auto accident which left me with a bad hip -- that, and a surprise pre-holiday gift of colon cancer forced me to retire from teaching, and my income was severely limited. I had to transfer my half of the property to the coowner and move to another place I have on the other side of town, near the train station -- I have this real estate for sale right here on YardSaleNet -- SHOP / APARTMENT / GARAGES I was allowed to keep things at the old place simply because I didn't have room to stash it where I moved to -- now, the owner of that place has it for sale, and I have to find a place for my many art and antique items, as well as this fantastic fence. Everything else I can find a place for (more or less), but the fence has to go, so now is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire this extremely unique vintage wrought iron fence to front your property. Believe me, if I could use it I wouldn't think twice! So for the last week or so I have been going to the old place and taking some photos of the stacked up fence segments (which were ivy covered behind what used to be a greenhouse) and posts, and taking measurements. Click on thumbnail, which opens in new screen for convenience Apparently, there are 12
segments -- what it looked like beneath the overgrown
ivy--
a close up of a partial top segment is shown in the header note the grape vines, which now grow along the inside border of the former greenhouse walls OK, so now you have some idea what the fence itself looks like, now to the posts I had made for it -- they had been stacked on the front porch -- I counted 16 of them
To give you some idea of their height, the next photo shows a pair upright against the wall -- the door to the right leads to the separate upstairs apartment
The Measurements Now where did I put that card? OK, still in my wallet : Posts - Length - 171.5 cm = 67.5 in = 5.6 ft / Width - 5.3 cm = 2+ in Fence Post - Weight - ± 25 lb Fence - Length - 241.0 cm = 94.8 in = 7.9 ft / Height - 104.3 cm = 41 in = 3.5 ft Fence Vertical Bars - 1.8 cm square = 0.75 in Fence Horizontals - 1.2 x 4.6 cm = 0.5 x 1.75+ in Fence Section - Weight - ? lb [probably a 100+ lb] There are 12 fence sections, so that should give you enough for about 96 feet of length, not counting the added space taken up by the upright posts. Most property fronts have a driveway, so that open space would make the useful length even longer. I believe there are 4 end posts, but did not personally unstack them all to find out. You would have to purchase this fence and take it with you -- a car towing vehicle would probably do the trick, and a couple strong backs to do the lifting and actual loading on the flatbed. I could probably arrange for its transport to just about anywhere in the continental USA, IF my moving dude was available for the task, but have no idea what it would cost. Oh, yes, the cost! I am certainly NOT going to accept a penny less than what I paid for all of it, plus my repair / prime / post costs, thus making it exactly what I shelled out for the fence = $ 5,800, ONLY in cash -- no PayPal nor partial cash / postage stamp payments! Some peep tried that on me recently on eBay, and I sent it back! I am totally sure that you recognize the outstanding fine quality, high class appearance, and totally vintage custom hand-made nature of this fine wrought iron fencing -- if you had it made of the same materials today it would probably cost you at least twice that much. I had some much smaller things made for me in the Canary Islands, and they are a LOT cheaper than they are here, but I doubt that even they would give me a quote this cheapo! Please do NOT bother me with further questions about things I have already addressed in my item description -- I have given absolutely all of the information that I think is important in my long-winded shaggy dog story above -- and if you come over to look at it / pick it up after purchasing it, please bring $CASH$, don't waste my time, or yours! |
