An Experiment in
Cat Breeding
| I
have been experimenting with crossing an old stock apple-headed
Siamese with a much newer breed hairless Sphynx to try to get
a second generation Sphynx which might be an improvement on the
existing Sphynx stock |

The first
generation
resulted in 3 kittens - 2 females
and a male
It was the second litter for the Siamese,
who had Siamese kittens the first time
|
One
of the two females was absolutely pure black, the runt of the
litter, but adorable and friendly -- the other 2 |
were |
almost indistinguishable, short fine haired,
also just as lovable, but their coloration impressed me due to
its pattern
I kept the female to hopefully cross with
the same male Sphynx - one of the second generation kittens may potentially be
hairless if genetic principles hold true

What I am interested in is what kind of
cat is TigerGirl? I do not think I have ever seen a street cat
with this kind of really short hair and marking pattern before.
At this point, at about five months old (she was born in early
September of 2002), her hair is less than half the length of that
of her mommy, and is seemingly smoother and perhaps finer.
She is extremely friendly, always wants
to be with me, and purrs like a motor! Her eyes are a bright sort
of golden yellowish.
I adopted the other two kittens out a couple
months ago, and although I did not anticipate the Siamese having
more cross-breed kittens, it might be interesting to see what
colors and patterns they might have. Somehow I sort of think that
at least one will be very similar to TigerGirl.

the two
cuties like TigerGirl -- notice how short their whiskers are
-- years ago I actually saw the mother cat trimming her kitten's
whiskers -- I wonder if it was to keep them from getting into
tight spaces? |

OK, so now these lovable kittens are two
months old -- I think that there is a male and a female of each
of the colors -- Fran, the lady who usually finds new homes for
the kittens that friends give me to care for, said it might take
her two to three weeks before she can take them -- she did place
the last two within days of getting them -- but she has some babies
that she has to hand feed, and until they are adopted out, she
cannot take these -- but I would like to have my bed to myself
afer two months!
Actually I would like to keep another female,
one of the black ones this time (although I really like the striped
ones a lot more) for my experimental Sphynx breeding stock --
BUT, there comes a time when I must look at all of the things
which I have to do, and another cat is just not in the stars at
this point.

2004 -- A couple months ago TigerGirl was
with her Dad, Kamiel, the older male Sphynx -- they did not seem
particularly friendly with each other
 |
TigerGirl
seemed sort of fat on 8 February 2004; although I could perhaps
feel something in her abdomen, and her teets were developing,
her stomach muscles were not tight -- which is my clue to nearness
to giving birth |
 |
she was
acting strange on 13 February, and delivered a single female,
virtually hairless kitten -- in over 30 years of cat breeding
my female cats have had only one kitten once before! |
 |
two weeks
later, on 27 February, I let the baby crawl around a Hillary
Clinton beanie-sized bear, for scale -- notice the round spot
on her back -- I think I shall name her MissTerry
= mystery cat |
 |
another
view of MissTerry -- note the extremely fine to nonexistent hair
-- she also does not have any obvious whiskers, which is a clue
as to how hairless a kitten might eventually become -- she is
a fatty! For some reason, at this point, her head does not look
very Sphynx, and her tail seems a tad shorter than my Sphynxes |
