My Unidentified Antique European Teddys

These are the pics of the two jointed Teddy Bears which I obtained from my landlady in Bonn, Germany, while I was studying there in the mid-1960s. The woman said they were her grandmother's and had been in storage for years and years. She did not know where they came from, but suggested that they may be British, although several people told me they have the look of some older German bears.

They look and smell oldish. A faint scent of wood is noted when I sniff them. Paw pads "dirty" and appear "worn" BUT not torn through anywhere. The hair, whatever it is made of (she said it was mohair) is shortish and soft.

The noses look in great shape, although, from the pics, are NOT totally centered or symetrical. I made a bear last year and found that it was NOT the easiest thing to get the nose perfect, although with "over" stitching, they can be "perfected". The inverted V-shaped mouth is stitched from a vertical line extending down from the nose.

Eyes appear solid black and of glass, having a diameter of 9.0 (smaller bear) and 10.0mm (larger bear). Ears are wider and fuller than other, newer ones, that I have. Arms are NOT straight down, rather there is a slight foreward bend/curve at about the pads.

When I was examining the leg of the smaller bear I felt something hard sticking out, so I took tweezers and pulled it out -- looks like a curved piece of wood and some brownish colored fuzzy stuff.

About 34 cm long, from head to foot (= about 13 3/8"), black glass-like eyes having a diameter of 9.0mm, shaven nose, slight hump, arms basically to hip, stuffing unknown but it feels sort of hard (above pictured "sample" came from this bear).

Approximately 49 cm long (= about 19 1/4"), from head to foot, black glass-like eyes having a diameter of 10.0mm, surprisingly pronounced hump on back, extra long arms to well below hip and extra long legs, large ears, stuffing unknown but sort of feels hard-- like wood shavings (?)

I was told they were made of mohair-- but can NOT distinguish mohair from anything else. Is there a non-complicated way to identify the fuzzy material?

I sold these cute Bears to a friend on 17 October 1999.

God Bless !
